The Shiwarski Tissue Engineering Lab investigates how human disease alters the structure and function of the vascular system across organs and tissue types. We integrate advanced 3D bioprinting, cell biology, regenerative medicine, and microfluidics to engineer experimental platforms that connect 3D tissue structure, extracellular matrix composition, biomechanical force, and altered receptor signaling to disease pathology. We develop open-source scientific hardware and software to reduce cost, improve device capability, and make rigorous tissue engineering accessible to a broader community. Through hands-on education and outreach, we help students see and quantify biology in action, building the skills and curiosity that drive the next generation of translational science.
