Diversity from a biological perspective promotes the survival of the species but adds a layer of complexity to experimental design and results. It is critical to ensure diversity within our research projects, as well as a diverse and inclusive team of students.
Diversity alone, is not sufficient, and individuals can often still feel marginalized even within a diverse setting. To avoid marginalization of individuals we need to recognize our own unconscious bias. We must be aware of how differences can:
By being exposed to an inclusive environment at a young age and forming personal relationships across diversity boundaries, one can form views of the world that are not limited by their differences but instead enriched by them.
One way to promote diversity in academia is to increase 1st hand exposure to DEI by actively recruiting and establishing a diverse student and faculty population that encourages open communication and inclusivity. We need to value, celebrate, and leverage our differences to avoid marginalization.
Various DEI activities within our lab and the Department include:
The Platinum Rule is a concept that encourages people to treat others with respect and understanding, taking into account their individual differences. It’s an extension of the Golden Rule, which says to treat others as you would want to be treated, but the Platinum Rule acknowledges that people have different preferences, communication styles, and ways of experiencing the world.
